Smell the popcorn and dim the lights! The sound and picture quality in our theater are better than you get at the movies! Certainly, the leather recliners and sectional sofa provide the luxury movie moguls will envy.

The acoustics of this theater were modeled on a computer by Dick. Dick also modeled the acoustics of another home he designed and owned, now known as "Wurlitzer Manor and Gardens". For a glimpse of this other extremely unique home, please visit Wurlitzer Manor.

All furniture, sound equipment and accessories will remain with the theater.

Standing in the doorway of the theater, the 10' widescreen and seating are visible. The curtains on either side of the screen provide access to the audio-video equipment and front speakers. The screen is a 122-1/2" Vutec Soundscreen, acoustically transparent which allows the front speakers to be placed directly behind the screen per THX specifications.

Viewing from the left corner with camera flash turned upward.

From the doorway with a scene from Jurassic Park filling the screen.

Taken from the center of the screen. The front row is a 13' curved sectional sofa. The back row is elevated 20" and consists of four leather rocker-recliner chairs. The Dwin video projector can be seen on the rear wall between the door and movie poster. The alcove on the right contains an antique sideboard with a microwave oven for making popcorn and a soft-drink cooler.

The heart of the audio system can be seen here. From top to bottom:

Sony DVP-CX985V DVD player which holds 400 DVDs with remote selection.
Parasound C2 THX Ultra-II controller which can handle 8 audio-video devices.
Rane PE15 parametric equalizer for subwoofers.
Monster HTS5100 Signature Series home theater power conditioner.
Dwin Transvision 3 outboard video processor which drives the projector.
Adcom GFA-1 400 watt amplifiers which drive the side and rear surround speakers.

These three monstrous Threshold S1000 (left and right channels) and SA-1 (center channel) monoblock amplifiers drive the six front speakers located behind the screen.

With the screen removed, the front speakers are visible. Each of the front channels (left, center, right) consists of two custom cinema speakers, each containing two 8" midbass drivers and two ribbon tweeters with a custom designed dispersion horn. Each of the large custom subwoofers contain four 12" bass drivers in a push-pull parallel arrangement driven by a 250-watt subwoofer amplier. You can see the back side of two of the four 12" speakers on each cabinet. The other two are inside the cabinet facing outward. Many thanks to Paul Johnson of The Loudspeaker Store for the excellent speaker design which creates sound quality to satisfy the most discriminating listener.

Remodel Photos

Dan is raising the collar ties in the ceiling of the theater as per the structural engineer's recommendation. The 13' high peaked roofline makes an ideal design for preventing floor-to-ceiling standing waves.

Steve sweeps up after a long day of remodelling. Here you can see the three levels of the floor for soundproofing. On the left, Dan is standing on the first level of plywood flooring. The brown material that Steve is sweeping is 3/4" soundboard used in many commercial theaters. To the right is the top layer of plywood. All walls are built with a layer of soundboard sandwiched between two layers of sheetrock.
