Dick Wilcox

Dick WilcoxDick began his hardware design career at an early age in Florida where he designed audio equipment using vacuum tubes for his own and other local Rock-N-Roll bands.  His designs included guitar amplifiers, echo chambers and mixers.  Even at this early age, Dick realized that “if you don’t move air, you can’t make sound.”

In 1962 his designs switched to transistors for ground-control guidance systems for the Centaur Rockets used at Cape Canaveral.  In 1965 Honeywell transferred Dick to the Electronic Data Processing Division in Wellesley, Massachusetts.  This sparked Dick’s life-long fascination with computers, beginning with the extremely large Datamatic D1000 which used vacuum tubes and was housed in seven large, specially designed rooms.
Dick continued his love of electronics and was an original founder of Alpha Microsystems in 1977.  He also added the element of aerodynamics and in 1972 he obtained his private pilot’s license.

After owning several airplanes, Dick purchased a new 1979 Beech Bonanza equipped with nearly every electronic gadget available.  Dick’s childhood fascination with the pipe organ and its tremendous sounds eventually lead him to Ray DeVault.  In 1979 Dick flew his Bonanza to Sacramento to visit Ray at Devtronix Organs to discuss his exotic idea of building an electronic simulation of a real pipe organ.

At that time, Dick met Tim Rickman who was working for Ray as a technician.  Dick’s off-beat sense of humor soon blended with Tim’s and they became fast friends.  After seeing the massive amount of building, soldering and wiring involved in the standard diode keying system in common use at the time, Dick decided that a computer could be designed to do the same work in much less time. After some hardware design, programming and testing, the Devtronix Multi-Action Organ control system was born.  See the reprint of the article which appeared in the Console magazine for details here.  This new system began selling in 1984.

The original Devtronix relay has been modified and upgraded several times since the original model.  In 1994 Dick and Tim separated from Ray and the system became known as the Uniflex Relay System, which is currently operational all over the globe.  Although Tim died unexpectedly in late 2008, Dick continues to sell, design and oversee all the hardware and software for the relays.  The latest version, the Uniflex 3000, runs over standard CAT5 network cables and is controlled by any standard PC running Windows XP or Vista.

Linda Wilcox

Linda WilcoxLinda actually had a life before pipe organs and Dick Wilcox.  As a child, her father instilled in her a love of, admiration for and addiction to baseball, in particular the Cleveland Indians.  He stressed that baseball is not just a game but it teaches all the lessons you learn in life.  The strategy, the preparation, the perseverance and the endless hope of a better record next year became a part of her thought processes.

Linda graduated from Kent State University in 1972 with a dual degree in Social Work and Sociology and a misconception that she could save the world, the perseverance and the endless hope but little strategy.  After several positions in child protective services in Cleveland, Columbus and Las Vegas, she finally realized that her strategy plotted a different course.  Linda moved into management and used her preparation and organization skills to design and develop one of the most successful child advocacy programs in the country, the Clark County Court Appointed Special Advocate Program.  Along with her advocacy skills, Linda refined her mediation skills and also began a successful career in alternative dispute resolution.

After retiring from the district court after nearly thirty years of service, Linda decided that the world of leisure was not really suited to her needs.  She soon returned to the work world in private practice as a mediator focusing on business, real estate and domestic disputes.  After marrying Dick Wilcox, Linda was given a glimpse into the world of pipe organs.  She saw the passion and excitement in his eyes and somehow it leaped from him to her.  Today, she serves as office manager, customer service representative and general visionary for Uniflex Relay Systems.
